September 7, 2010, Langley BC: This summer’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream attracted more than 3000 people to the nine performances at the two Langley venues. The play, written by William Shakespeare almost 500 years ago, was a major achievement for director Allan Thain and the 50 people in the cast and crew.
Bard in the Valley Founder and Artistic Director, Allan Thain said: “We had wonderful support from the community – the municipalities, our sponsors and the Founding 50 all helped to make this a ‘Dream” come true.”
Thain added, “We saw many people in the audience coming back to see the show a second time and bringing their friends and family with them. Even the weather was on our side with no rain falling on any of our performances.”
The play, which was the first production mounted by the new Langley theatre company – Bard in the Valley – was not without challenges. The logistics of staging a play in two outdoor venues required some creative solutions: the lights and sound equipment had to be moved indoors after every performance and the set had to be taken down and stored in a semi-trailer truck after every weekend.
Building on the success of this year’s performance The Bard in the Valley team has already started working on plans for next year’s production of As You Like It – another of Shakespeare’s delightful comedies.
